Less than two years after its founding, Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) announced on Thursday that it would be closing its online learning program for high school students in India.
Early last year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Amazon Academy platform was launched. It provided preparation for competitive tests including the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which grants admission to top engineering universities in India.
The e-commerce giant said in a statement that it had decided to phase out Amazon Academy based on an evaluation “to accommodate current customers.”

The closure comes at a time when many edtech companies are struggling as India’s schools and coaching facilities reopened after the COVID-19 lockdown. Industry pioneer Byju’s announced last month that it would lay off 2,500 employees to boost revenue.
