Twitter Is About to Start Charging for a Complimentary Security Feature 2023

Last night Platformer Zoe Schiffer tweeted a breaking news item announcing that Twitter would start charging for SMS-based two-factor verification (2FA). Twitter itself has now Acknowledged this in an official statement.

Twitter 2FA Authentication

Users must now pay for Twitter’s fundamental safe authentication mechanism. From March 20th, Twitter will disable your 2FA authentication if you don’t upgrade to Twitter Blue ($8 per month for Android users and $11 per month for iOS users), change to a more dependable authenticator software, or obtain a physical security key.

Twitter Hacks

With the ubiquity of SIM swap hacks nowadays, the majority of people may simply stop using SMS as a form of authentication as a result. Even Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, was a victim of a similar strategy four years ago. The last thing you want is for someone to access your accounts just so they may pretend to be you by using your phone number.

While Twitter claims that this change is necessary, it wouldn’t be shocking if there was a more obvious explanation: sending SMS texts is expensive, and Twitter is now having financial difficulties. In reality, even before Elon Musk became involved, the corporation had been phasing out SMS.

Cybersecurity researcher Rachel Tobac draws attention to the fact that only 2.6% of Twitter users have enabled 2FA as of December 2021, and of those users, 74% used SMS as their preferred authentication method.
