VPN Status in the System Tray of Windows 11
Twitter user PhantomOcean3 identified a new hidden feature in Windows 11 ‘Dev’ build 25247 That when Activated, Displays a little shield icon overlay the Network system tray icon when connecting to a VPN,
Another neat hidden change in 25247, a minor one – when you are connected using a VPN, there will soon be a small ‘shield’ overlay on the network icon to indicate that. (also, it respects your accent color!)

Unfortunately, The New Function has certain restrictions because WiFi is not supported and it can only be used to connect to VPNs set up using the built-in Windows 11 client.
PhantomOcean3 tweeted on the new function, saying that it “seems to operate only if you connect to a VPN using the quick setting or the Network & internet > VPN page in Settings.”

Additionally, Utilising their Programmes to connect to commercial VPN services breaks the feature.
The indicator does not currently display when connected to a VPN in BleepingComputer’s tests using both NordVPN and ProtonVPN.
However, as a work-in-progress and unannounced feature, it is in its early stages and incomplete.
Even while this is a highly useful tool, Microsoft has already acknowledged that some features identified in Windows Insider builds might never be included in final versions.
How to Make Windows 11’s VPN indication Active
You can enrol in the Windows Insider Programme and install the most recent Windows 11 build (build 25247) or later if you want to test out the new VPN indication.
You must enrol in the Windows Insider program’s “Dev” channel in order to access this build.
Please Follow these instructions to activate the new Task Manager once the most recent Windows 11 insider build has been installed:
- Download ViveTool, which makes Windows 10 and Windows 11’s hidden developer features accessible. After downloading, unzip the file.
- Navigate to the location from which you extracted the ViveTool by opening an Elevated Command prompt.
- Enter each of these commands by typing them. Although not all of them are required, they are all a component of the new feature.
vivetool /enable /id:38113452
ViveTool will Answer with “Successfully set feature configuration” once you issue the command.
By executing the Following ViveTool Commands from an elevated command prompt when testing is complete, you can turn off the hidden functionality.
vivetool /disable /id:38113452
It is Advised to Test on a virtual system with backup snapshots before using ViveTool to enable hidden functionality.
